The winery

A house with cellars in Requena and four generations of Bobal

Requena sits on a plateau almost 700 metres high, with cold winters, dry summers and cool nights that give thick-skinned, deeply coloured grapes. Beneath our house are the galleries dug by hand more than a century ago, where the barrels rest today. We are a small winery: we make little, by hand when it matters, and sell almost all of it to the people who come to see us.

  1. 1912

    The cellars

The family digs three galleries under the house to keep the wine at a steady temperature, as was done in the neighbourhood back then.

  2. 1958

    Our first own vines

Bobal is planted at Los Cantos; those vines still give the grapes for our longest-ageing wines.

  3. 1994

    A wine with our name

After decades of selling grapes in bulk, the first vintage is bottled under the family name.

  4. 2009

    Organic farming

Every plot moves to organic farming: cover crops, organic fertiliser and no herbicides at all.

  5. Today

    Open doors

Tours, tastings, vineyard walks and a dining room in the hall where wine was made for seventy years.

The vineyard

Old Bobal vines, organically farmed

We farm our vineyards without synthetic herbicides or insecticides, with grass between the rows and compost made on the estate. Bobal is the house grape: it copes with drought, ripens late and gives fresh, deeply coloured wines. We also grow Macabeo for the whites and the sparkling wine, plus a few rows of Garnacha Tintorera.

Our vineyard sites, in hectares

  • Los Cantos9 ha

Bobal planted in 1958, bush-trained on river-stone soil. The source of Paraje Los Cantos and the Reserva.

  • La Hoya5 ha

A hollow of clay and limestone that holds moisture: the Bobal for our young red and rosé.

  • El Ribazo3.5 ha
  • Casa Alta1.5 ha

From vine to bottle

  1. Living soil

Grass between rows, compost made from vine prunings and manure, and sulphur or copper only when the year calls for it.

  2. Picking plot by plot

Each site is picked when it is ready, into 15 kg crates and early in the morning, so the grapes arrive cool.

  3. Gentle winemaking

Fermentations with the vineyard’s own yeasts, in small tanks so we can follow each plot separately.

  4. Ageing in the cellars

French oak barrels and clay amphorae in the galleries, at 14 °C all year round.

  5. Sold at home

We bottle at the winery and most of it is sold right here, to the people who come to taste it.

The wines

Nine house wines, nearly all of them Bobal

Young wines for every day, single-site wines aged in the cellars, a Macabeo white, a bled rosé and a long-aged sparkling wine. All from our own organically farmed grapes.

  2. Example review E-bikes and lunch

We did the e-bike route among the almond trees and got back just in time for lunch. The grilled lamb was perfect.

  3. Example review Harvest day

Eight of us came in October. We ended up with purple hands, a great lunch and a case of wine each.

  4. Example review Guided tasting

My parents don’t drink alcohol, so they were poured the grape juice at every step and enjoyed it as much as we did.
